Victory in Europe Day (VE Day)

Victory in Europe Day (VE Day) is celebrated on May 8 to mark the formal acceptance of Nazi Germany's unconditional surrender in World War II, effectively ending the war in Europe. On this day in 1945, the Allies accepted Germany's surrender, bringing an end to six years of war on the European continent. VE Day is observed as a public holiday in France (Jour de la Victoire) and several other European countries.

On May 7, 1945, German General Alfred Jodl signed the unconditional surrender in Reims, France. The following day, May 8, was declared Victory in Europe Day. In Berlin, Field Marshal Wilhelm Keitel signed a separate surrender document to the Soviets. The war in Europe officially ended at 23:01 Central European Time on May 8, 1945. Massive celebrations erupted across Europe and North America, with millions taking to the streets. Winston Churchill addressed the British people, declaring "This is your victory."

VE Day is commemorated differently across countries. In France, it is a public holiday called "Jour de la Victoire" with ceremonies at war memorials and the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. The UK holds commemorations at the Cenotaph in London. Veterans lay wreaths, military parades are held, and moments of silence honor the fallen. Many countries display flags and hold special church services. The 75th anniversary in 2020 saw worldwide virtual commemorations due to the pandemic.
