What is Victory Day?

Victory Day (Zafer Bayramı) is one of Turkey's most important national holidays, celebrated on August 30 each year. It commemorates the decisive victory at the Battle of Dumlupınar on August 30, 1922, the final major battle of the Turkish War of Independence (1919-1923). This battle effectively ended the Greek occupation of western Anatolia and sealed the fate of the Turkish nationalist movement's triumph.

Victory Day is also celebrated as Turkish Armed Forces Day (Türk Silahlı Kuvvetleri Günü), honoring the military that secured Turkey's independence and sovereignty under the command of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who served as Commander-in-Chief during the battle.

History & Origin

Following World War I, the Ottoman Empire was occupied by Allied forces, and Greece launched an invasion of western Anatolia in May 1919 with Allied support. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk organized the Turkish national resistance movement from Ankara, rallying forces against the occupation.

The Great Offensive (Büyük Taarruz) was launched on August 26, 1922. After days of fierce fighting, the decisive blow came at the Battle of Dumlupınar on August 30, 1922, near the town of Kütahya. Atatürk personally commanded the Turkish forces from the hilltop headquarters at Kocatepe.

The Greek army suffered a devastating defeat, and its commander-in-chief, General Trikoupis, was captured. The Turkish forces then pursued the retreating Greek army westward, liberating İzmir (Smyrna) on September 9, 1922. This decisive victory led to the Armistice of Mudanya in October 1922 and eventually the Treaty of Lausanne in July 1923, which recognized the sovereignty of the new Turkish state.

The first official Victory Day celebrations were held on August 30, 1923, just two months before the proclamation of the Republic.
