Harry S. Truman was born on May 8, 1884, in Lamar, Missouri. He grew up in Independence, Missouri, and after various careers including farming and running a haberdashery, he entered politics in the 1920s with the backing of the Pendergast political machine in Kansas City.

He authorized the use of atomic bombs on Hiroshima (August 6, 1945) and Nagasaki (August 9, 1945), leading to Japan's surrender and the end of World War II.
