History & Origin

From 1798 to 1813, Geneva was annexed by France and became the capital of the French département of Léman. The city lost its centuries-old independence as a republic.

On December 30, 1813, Austrian forces under General Bubna entered Geneva as Napoleon's empire crumbled. The French garrison withdrew, and on December 31, 1813, Geneva's citizens proclaimed the restoration of their republic.

Syndic Ami Lullin famously proclaimed: "Genevans, the Republic is restored!" ("Genevois, la République est restaurée!"). Church bells rang throughout the city, and Genevans celebrated in the streets.

Two years later, in 1815, the restored Republic of Geneva joined the Swiss Confederation, gaining the unique status it holds today. The canton gained additional territories, increasing its size significantly.
