Thai Father's Day

Thai Father's Day (วันพ่อแห่งชาติ, Wan Pho Haeng Chat) is a national holiday in Thailand observed on December 5th each year. The date marks the birthday of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX), who was born on December 5, 1927, and who reigned for 70 years until his passing in 2016. King Bhumibol is regarded as the father of the nation, and this day honours both his legacy and fatherhood across Thailand.

Thai Father's Day was first officially designated in 1980 to coincide with the birthday of King Bhumibol Adulyadej. King Bhumibol, born December 5, 1927, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, was the longest-reigning monarch in Thai history, serving from June 9, 1946, until his death on October 13, 2016. He was deeply beloved by the Thai people for his extensive royal development projects, including irrigation systems, agricultural innovations, and poverty alleviation programmes. During his reign, December 5 also served as Thailand's National Day. After his passing, the National Day was moved to July 28 (King Rama X's birthday), but December 5 remains Father's Day and a public holiday.

On Thai Father's Day, children present canna lilies (ดอกพุทธรักษา, dok phuttharaksa) to their fathers. The canna lily symbolises paternal love and protection. Thais wear yellow — the colour of Monday, the day King Bhumibol was born — to show their devotion. Government buildings and homes display portraits of King Bhumibol alongside yellow decorations. Buddhist merit-making ceremonies are held at temples throughout the country. The evening features candlelight ceremonies where people gather to sing songs in tribute to King Bhumibol and their fathers. Many organisations also hold special events honouring exemplary fathers.
