History & Origin
Ranieri Scacceri was born in 1118 in Pisa to a prosperous merchant family. As a young man, he lived a carefree and dissolute life, devoted to music and entertainment. At age nineteen, a chance encounter with a holy man named Alberto transformed his life. Struck by profound remorse, Ranieri gave away all his possessions and embarked on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, where he spent thirteen years living as a hermit in Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and other sacred places. He returned to Pisa in 1154 and continued his ascetic life at the monastery of San Vito and later at Sant'Andrea. He became renowned for miracles involving water, including calming storms and multiplying provisions for the poor. He died on June 17, 1160, and was canonized shortly after. His relics were translated to the Pisa Cathedral in 1161.
How It's Celebrated
The celebrations begin on June 16th with the Luminara di San Ranieri, one of Italy's most enchanting spectacles. As darkness falls, over 70,000 candles in glass holders called lumini are lit along the buildings, bridges, and towers lining the Arno River, transforming Pisa into a magical landscape of flickering light. The Luminara tradition dates back to 1688. At midnight, a spectacular fireworks display illuminates the sky. On June 17th, the Regata di San Ranieri takes place on the Arno, a rowing competition between Pisa's four historic quarters: Santa Maria, San Francesco, Sant'Antonio, and San Martino. The day also features a solemn religious procession carrying St. Ranieri's relics from the Cathedral through the city, accompanied by medieval costumed participants and the historic banners of Pisa.
