History & Origin

Sant'Efisio (Ephysius) was born in the 3rd century, possibly in Antioch or Aelia Capitolina (Jerusalem). He served as a Roman military commander sent to Sardinia to persecute Christians during the Diocletian persecution. However, according to legend, he experienced a vision of Christ and converted to Christianity himself. After openly professing his new faith, Efisio was arrested, tortured, and ultimately beheaded in Nora around 303 AD. His relics were kept in the church built on the site of his martyrdom. The festival began in 1657 when Cagliari was devastated by a plague epidemic. The city's inhabitants made a vow to Sant'Efisio, promising an annual pilgrimage if the plague would end. When the epidemic ceased, the citizens honored their vow, and the procession has continued uninterrupted for over 360 years, even during World War II.

How It's Celebrated

The Festa di Sant'Efisio begins on May 1st with a grand procession departing from the church of Sant'Efisio in Cagliari's Stampace district. The saint's statue is placed on an ornate gilded coach (cocchio) and carried through the streets accompanied by thousands of participants. Riders on horseback, decorated oxcarts (traccas) carrying folk groups, and pilgrims in traditional Sardinian costumes from over 40 different villages create a spectacular display. The procession travels to Nora, where Sant'Efisio was martyred, arriving on May 2nd. After religious ceremonies at the ancient church in Nora, the return journey begins, with the procession arriving back in Cagliari on May 4th. Traditional launeddas (Sardinian triple-pipe instruments) and folk songs accompany the entire journey.
