St. Andrew's Day

St. Andrew's Day is Scotland's official national day, celebrated on November 30th. It honors Saint Andrew, the patron saint of Scotland, and is a bank holiday in Scotland where workers have the right to take the day off.

Saint Andrew was one of Jesus' twelve apostles. According to legend, his relics were brought to Scotland in the 8th century. The saltire (St. Andrew's Cross)—a white X on a blue background—became Scotland's national flag and is one of the oldest flags still in use.

Celebrations include ceilidhs (traditional Scottish dances), Scottish music, poetry recitals, and traditional food like haggis, neeps, and tatties. Many buildings are lit up in blue, and cultural events take place throughout Scotland and in Scottish communities worldwide.
