The First Serbian Uprising began on February 15, 1804, when Serbian revolutionaries led by Đorđe Petrović, known as Karađorđe (Black George), rose against the Ottoman dahijas (janissary commanders) who had been terrorizing the Serbian population. This uprising marked the beginning of Serbia's struggle for independence from the Ottoman Empire.
Exactly 31 years later, on February 15, 1835, the first Serbian constitution was adopted at an assembly in Kragujevac. Known as the Sretenje Constitution (Sretenjski ustav), it was one of the most liberal constitutions in Europe at the time, guaranteeing civil liberties and limiting the prince's power.
