History & Origin

Leopold III was born in 1073 in Gars am Kamp in Lower Austria. He became Margrave of Austria in 1095 and ruled until his death in 1136. Unlike many rulers of his time, Leopold was known for his peaceful approach, declining the offer of the Holy Roman Emperor's crown to focus on his lands.

His most lasting legacy is the founding of Klosterneuburg Monastery in 1114, according to legend built on the spot where he found his wife Agnes's veil that had blown away years earlier during their wedding. He also founded Heiligenkreuz Abbey in 1133.

Leopold was married to Agnes of Waiblingen, daughter of Emperor Henry IV, and had 18 children. After his death in 1136, he was buried at Klosterneuburg. The canonization process began in the 14th century, and he was declared a saint in 1485 by Pope Innocent VIII.

In 1663, Leopold III was declared the patron saint of Austria, replacing Saint Coloman, and his feast day on November 15th became an important regional celebration.
