History & Origin
Saint Florian was born around 250 AD in the Roman town of Aelium Cetium (present-day Sankt Pölten, Austria). He served as a senior officer in the Roman army and was responsible for organizing firefighting brigades in the Roman province of Noricum.
When the persecution of Christians intensified under Emperor Diocletian, Florian openly declared his faith. According to legend, he went to Lorch (modern Enns-Lorch) to encourage persecuted Christians and was arrested around 304 AD.
Despite being offered clemency if he renounced Christianity, Florian refused. He was sentenced to death by drowning in the Enns River with a millstone tied around his neck. Legend states that an eagle guarded his body until a pious woman named Valeria recovered it and gave it a proper burial.
His relics were later transferred to the Augustinian monastery that became known as St. Florian's Monastery (Stift Sankt Florian), which remains one of Austria's most important religious sites.
