History & Origin

On April 9, 1388, a small force of about 400-600 Glarus fighters faced an Austrian Habsburg army of approximately 6,000-15,000 soldiers. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the Glarus forces achieved a remarkable victory.

The battle took place during the ongoing conflicts between the Swiss Confederation and the Habsburg dynasty. The victory secured Glarus's independence and strengthened the Swiss Confederation.

According to legend, a sudden April snowstorm helped the Glarus fighters by obscuring their movements and causing confusion among the Austrian forces. Eleven large stones mark the spots where Austrian knights fell during the battle.

The commemoration began shortly after the battle in 1389 and has been held continuously for over 630 years, making it one of the longest-running annual commemorations in the world.
