History & Origin

Luxembourg's National Day has not always been on June 23. Historically, the celebration was held on the reigning sovereign's actual birthday. Under Grand Duchess Charlotte (reigned 1919–1964), whose birthday was January 23, the festivities were moved to June 23 in 1961 to take advantage of warmer summer weather.

When Grand Duke Jean succeeded Charlotte in 1964, June 23 was retained as the official celebration date, even though his birthday was January 5. The same tradition has continued under Grand Duke Henri, who has reigned since 2000 (his actual birthday is April 16).

The holiday's significance grew during World War II, when Grand Duchess Charlotte's radio broadcasts from exile became a symbol of resistance against the Nazi occupation (1940–1944). Luxembourg was annexed by Germany and its people subjected to forced conscription. Charlotte's voice from London kept national hope alive, and her return after liberation cemented the bond between the monarchy and the people.

Luxembourg gained full independence in 1839 under the Treaty of London and has been a Grand Duchy since the Congress of Vienna in 1815.
