History & Origin

Stephen was born around 975 as Vajk, son of Grand Prince Géza of the Árpád dynasty. After being baptized and taking the Christian name Stephen (István), he married Gisela of Bavaria and worked to unite the Hungarian tribes under Christianity.

Upon his father's death in 997, Stephen faced opposition from pagan chieftains but defeated them and consolidated his rule. In the year 1000 (or 1001), he received a crown from Pope Sylvester II, establishing Hungary as a Christian kingdom recognized by Rome.

King Stephen organized the Hungarian state, established the county system, founded monasteries and churches, and created laws promoting Christianity. He was canonized in 1083, just 45 years after his death, and remains Hungary's most revered historical figure.

August 20 became a national holiday in 1771 when King Stephen's right hand (the Holy Right) was transferred to Buda.
