King's Day (Koningsdag)

King's Day (Koningsdag) is the Dutch national holiday celebrating the birthday of King Willem-Alexander. Observed on April 27 (or April 26 if the 27th falls on Sunday), it is one of the biggest celebrations in the Netherlands. The entire country turns orange, the color of the Dutch royal House of Orange-Nassau, with millions participating in street parties, vrijmarkt (free markets), and festivals.

The holiday originated as Prinsessedag (Princess's Day) in 1885, celebrating Princess Wilhelmina's fifth birthday. It became Koninginnedag (Queen's Day) when she became queen in 1890. For over 100 years, it was celebrated on April 30 (Queen Juliana and Beatrix's birthday). When Willem-Alexander became king in 2013, the holiday shifted to April 27, his birthday, and was renamed Koningsdag. The tradition of wearing orange and holding free markets dates back to the early 20th century.

King's Day celebrations are famous for the vrijmarkt, where anyone can sell items on the street without permits or taxes. People dress in orange clothing, accessories, and wigs. Major cities like Amsterdam host massive street parties, live music, and boat parades through the canals. The royal family makes public appearances in different cities each year. Traditional foods include orange tompouce (custard pastry), orange-colored treats, and herring. Children perform music and activities on blankets to earn pocket money.
