History & Origin

Joaquim José da Silva Xavier (1746-1792) was born in the state of Minas Gerais. He worked various professions including mining, trading, and amateur dentistry—earning him the nickname Tiradentes ("tooth-puller").

In the late 18th century, Tiradentes became involved in the Inconfidência Mineira (Minas Conspiracy), a movement of intellectuals and military officers who sought to free Brazil from Portuguese rule, inspired by the American and French revolutions.

The conspiracy was betrayed before it could launch, and its members were arrested in 1789. While most conspirators had their sentences commuted, Tiradentes—as the lowest-ranking member—was made an example. He was hanged and quartered in Rio de Janeiro on April 21, 1792.

Initially portrayed as a traitor by Portuguese authorities, Tiradentes was rehabilitated as a national hero after Brazil became a republic in 1889. The date of his execution became a national holiday in 1946.
