Proclamation of the Republic Day

Proclamation of the Republic Day (Proclamação da República) is celebrated on November 15 in Brazil and commemorates the day in 1889 when Marshal Deodoro da Fonseca declared the end of the Brazilian Empire and the beginning of the Republic of Brazil. This national holiday marks one of the most significant political transformations in Brazilian history, ending 67 years of imperial rule under two emperors. The day celebrates Brazilian democratic values and civic identity.

By the late 1880s, the Brazilian Empire faced growing opposition from military leaders, republican activists, and the elite who were dissatisfied with Emperor Pedro II's rule. The abolition of slavery in 1888 had alienated powerful landowners, while military discontent grew over political interference and lack of recognition. On November 15, 1889, Marshal Deodoro da Fonseca led a military coup in Rio de Janeiro. Initially intending only to change the cabinet, he was convinced by republican leaders to proclaim the republic instead. Emperor Pedro II and the royal family peacefully went into exile in Europe. Deodoro became the first president of the Republic of Brazil, though the transition was largely engineered by military and elite interests rather than popular revolution.

Republic Day is commemorated with official ceremonies and civic events across Brazil. The main celebration takes place in the capital, Brasília, featuring military parades, the raising of the national flag, and speeches by government officials. Schools often hold special assemblies and educational programs about the republic's founding. Museums and cultural institutions organize exhibitions about Brazilian republican history. Unlike some other national holidays, Republic Day celebrations tend to be more formal and institutional rather than popular festivities. Many Brazilians use the long weekend for travel and family gatherings, as the holiday often creates a "bridge" with the weekend.
