Our Lady of Aparecida Day

Our Lady of Aparecida Day (Dia de Nossa Senhora Aparecida) is celebrated on October 12 and honors the patron saint of Brazil. This national holiday commemorates the Virgin Mary under the title of Our Lady of Aparecida, whose small black terracotta statue was discovered by fishermen in 1717. The day is both a religious celebration featuring masses and pilgrimages, and a celebration of Brazil's cultural and spiritual identity. October 12 is also Children's Day in Brazil, making it a double celebration.

The story of Our Lady of Aparecida began in October 1717 when three fishermen on the Paraíba River in São Paulo state were struggling to catch fish. After casting their nets repeatedly, they first pulled up a headless statue of the Virgin Mary, then the head in a subsequent cast. After this, their nets filled with fish. The small dark statue, blackened by time spent in the river mud, became known as Nossa Senhora Aparecida (Our Lady Who Appeared). Miracles were attributed to the statue, and a chapel was built. The devotion grew rapidly, leading to the construction of increasingly larger churches. In 1930, Pope Pius XI declared Our Lady of Aparecida the Queen and Patron of Brazil. The massive Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida, built between 1955 and 1980, is the second-largest Catholic church in the world.

The main celebration takes place at the Basilica of Our Lady of Aparecida in the city of Aparecida, São Paulo state, which receives millions of pilgrims throughout October. The day features special masses, processions carrying the statue of Our Lady, and the blessing of devotees. Many Brazilians make pilgrimages on foot, some traveling hundreds of kilometers. The "Room of Miracles" inside the basilica displays thousands of ex-votos - offerings left by devotees in thanks for answered prayers. Churches throughout Brazil hold special services, and families gather for religious observances and festive meals. Since the day coincides with Children's Day, many families also celebrate with gifts and activities for children.
