Nevada Day

Nevada Day is a state holiday in Nevada celebrated on October 31 each year. It commemorates Nevada's admission to the Union as the 36th state on October 31, 1864, during the American Civil War.

The holiday is one of Nevada's most important civic celebrations, marked by the largest parade in the state held in the capital city of Carson City. Nevada Day reflects the state's proud history and its unique role in American history as a state that was rushed into the Union to support the abolition of slavery and President Lincoln's re-election.

State government offices, schools, and many businesses close for the day, and communities across the state hold commemorative events, historical reenactments, and festive gatherings.

Nevada's path to statehood was shaped by the American Civil War. In the early 1860s, the Nevada Territory was rich in silver and gold from the famous Comstock Lode discovered in 1859. President Abraham Lincoln and the Republican Congress wanted Nevada admitted to the Union to secure additional electoral votes for Lincoln's 1864 re-election and to ensure support for the 13th Amendment abolishing slavery.

The process was so urgent that Nevada's entire state constitution was telegraphed to Washington D.C. on October 26, 1864 -- the longest and most expensive telegram ever sent at that time, costing over $3,400 (equivalent to over $60,000 today). The constitution was transmitted over two days and filled many pages.

President Lincoln proclaimed Nevada a state on October 31, 1864, just eight days before the presidential election. Nevada's admission gave the Union additional congressional votes to pass the 13th Amendment.

Nevada Day was first celebrated informally and became an official state holiday in 1933. The holiday was briefly moved to the last Friday in October in 2000 but was restored to October 31 in 2020 after a successful campaign by Carson City residents.

Carson City Parade: The highlight of Nevada Day is the grand parade in Carson City, Nevada's capital. It is the largest parade in the state, featuring marching bands, floats, equestrian groups, vintage cars, and civic organizations. The parade has been held since 1938.

Beard-Growing Contests: A quirky Nevada Day tradition is the beard-growing contest, where participants grow their beards in the weeks leading up to the holiday and compete for prizes.

Historical Reenactments: Actors and history enthusiasts perform reenactments of key moments in Nevada's history, including scenes from the mining era and the telegraph transmission of the constitution.

Nevada Day Ball: An elegant formal ball is held in Carson City, bringing together state officials, dignitaries, and community members for an evening of celebration.

Admission Day Ceremonies: Official ceremonies at the Nevada State Capitol in Carson City mark the anniversary of statehood, often featuring speeches by the governor and other officials.
